Project: Rekha Kalbelia tribute & One Billion Rising! women's rights project
Shakti Sundays are regular eco-festival events to celebrate the Udaipur region's unique performance energy, art and crafts, healing traditions, and environmental activism. They are sponsored by Udaipur's Collector, UIT & NLCP and organized by the Shakti Sunday Steering Committee, which invites the participation of interested artists, citizens, schools and NGOs throughout the Mewar area.
First Shakti Sunday project: "Rekha Kalbelia Tribute & Billion Women Rising"
Catalyzed by the local brutal murder of artist friend, Rekha Kalbelia, the Shakti Sunday Steering Committee launched a one-month project to commemorate her memory and awaken people more broadly to the issues of women's safety, welfare and equal rights.
1) Presented original dances dedicated to Rekha and women's rights in general by Bharat Verma's Heartbeators and volunteer women dance groups;
2) Introduced the Billion Women Rising! Movement to Udaipur with dance lessons, presentations, performances and films;
3) Staged multiple women's self-defense classes conducted by Raj Menaria’s Sensei Raj Academy of Self-Defense & Fitness and Vishnu Joshi’s Indian Martial Arts Gurukul Academy.
